The Service Industry Manifesto #2

Going To A Restaurant Early/Late

“Yeah, these guys hate your guts for making them work late”

This is something that’s come up a lot at my restaurant, and it’s overlooked by the general public. Walking into a restaurant early or late has become too normal lately. And I don’t mean you’re early or late to meet whoever else you’re with; I mean you show up fifteen minutes before the restaurant is open, or you come in fifteen minutes before closing time.

The Service Industry Manifesto #1

I’ve been working in the service industry on and off for the last seven years. Over that span of time, I’ve held every job that you can have in the front of the house; server, bartender, bouncer, bar back, busser, food runner, etc. The following column, which I hope to make a weekly gig, will highlight some of the things that I’ve noticed during my time. It might be a simple quip about something that happened over the course of my day (Shitty/Awesome customer stories), or it might be a full on analysis of a grander trend. (I could write a whole book about proper tipping) So here it is, my guide to how to properly act in a restaurant.

Bringing Kids To A Restaurant

Oh, the joys of parenthood! You found someone that enjoyed your company enough to let your privates and their privates do a high five, and nine months later you had a goo covered mess come screaming out of your wife and into your life. Fast forward eight or ten years, and you decide it’s time to take your brood out for a pleasant Saturday afternoon lunch. After all, you can’t just keep those little fuckers in a dog kennel with one of those gerbil water bottles while you and the missus enjoy mudslides at TGI Friday’s. These guidelines should be obvious to anyone with a modicum of intelligence, but you’d be surprised to see how often they’re neglected.

“…And The Battle Begun” by Rx Bandits

Posted 2 years ago

I never knew such sorrow as the setting sun

Rx Bandits have been a part of my life for the last twelve years or so, and have been my favorite band ever since I heard “Those Damn Bandits” when I was a sophomore in high school.  I seriously think that I’ve listened to at least one of their songs every week for the last decade or so.  But like everything else that is good, it must come to an end at some point.

The DnA Foodcast

I don’t listen to a whole lot of podcasts, but this new one is right in my wheelhouse since it’s co-hosted by Dave Hinkle and Alexander Sliwinski, who are also on the Xbox 360 Fancast.  Dave and Alexander have known each other for a couple years and have developed a great rapport during their time while working for Joystiq, and this first episode shows it.

Maui Brewing Co. Coconut Porter

The bar I work at recently received a shipment of this beer, and my manager told me that I just HAD to try it.  He’s guided me towards both fantastic brews and some real clunkers, but fortunately this one lands in the former of the two.

PAX Schedule

I’m less than seven hours away from jumping on my 6:30 AM flight to Boston (With a one hour layover in Chicago) and I can’t wait.  I downloaded the Conventionist app for my iPhone, and have set my schedule for what panels I want to attend over the course of the week.  Here’s what I’m hoping to hit…

Master Chiefs Kickin' It With My Cream Stout

I’ve been a fan of the Xbox 360 guys over at joystiq.com for a few years now, and they recently reached a large milestone.  Richard, Alexander, and Dave hit their 200th podcast, and I decided I had to do something for them, as they’d given me countless hours of entertainment.
